Serving mission workers

Advising people interested in overseas service
There is a process involved when considering overseas mission service and preparation required before serving overseas. Having had overseas mission experience and engaged with mission workers throughout the world, Echoes directors are well equiped and more than willing to give guidance and advice on these issues.

Preparation for service
At Echoes we have developed a process for commending UK workers abroad. After discussing your interest in mission work with your local church leadership, the Directors and Trustees work together with prospective workers and their church leadership to consider the available avenues for service and advise on the process. In preparing for service there are many issues to think through. We want to support prospective workers as they seek God's will, look into opportunities, and develop a pathway for going overseas.

Practical preparation for cross-cultural service
Preparation for service means supporting individuals and the local church. Echoes are able to assist by assessing the suitability of potential workers and walking through a process which helps to clarify the gifting, location of service, timing and steps which need to be taken before a new worker goes overseas. Practically we support the individual in providing advice on training and preparation for service, sponsoring a pre-field medical and psychological assessment, writing letters for the support of visas where necessary, giving guidance on insurance and finance while affirming the person for service in partnership with their local church. A key aspect of preparation is the annual Mission Orientation Programme held in Motherwell, Scotland.

Mission Orientation Programme
In February of each year Echoes and GLO partner to host a week-long Missions Orientation Programme (MOP). This 7-day intensive course held at Tilsley College, Motherwell is aimed at helping prepare those who are considering overseas mission service.

The course is strongly recommended by Echoes trustees who encourage those considering an association with Echoes in short or long-term service to attend. Echoes therefore are prepared to sponsor attendance and agree to cover the cost of the training course plus food and accommodation. The only requirement is that you cover the cost of travel to and from Motherwell.

While serving
The Trustees and Directors place a high value on pastoral care. We make it a priority to support workers in practical matters as well as personal care. While workers are overseas we can advise on National Insurance Contributions, health cover and pension schemes, regularly transmit funds received for your support and advise on other needs which may arise. Often workers find it useful to discuss ministry matters, future plans, educational issues and strategic plans with the Trustees who are very happy to engage in dialogue to support the workers. As often as time permits, the Trustees also aim to make overseas visits to encourage workers in their area of service.

Returning home
Whether on home leave or resettling in the UK, the Echoes Trustees will meet with workers to facilitate a debrief and assess the last period of service. This is a helpful time to process the time spent overseas and give an update on the work. In addition we support commending churches by helping provide practical tools which may be helpful in effectively supporting your mission worker as they are in the UK.
